Parking Rage in Pune: Murders, Assaults, and Vandalism on the Rise

Pune is a big city that’s growing very fast, but this has caused many problems, especially with parking. Many people are fighting because they can’t find a place to park their cars. Between 2021 and 2023, fights about parking spaces have gone up by 47%.

There are now more cars in Pune, going from 3.7 million in 2020 to 4.8 million in 2023, but there aren’t enough parking spots. In the last year, there have been 23 fights where people got hurt, 12 cases where cars were damaged, and sadly, three people lost their lives because of parking problems.

The worst places for these fights are Koregaon Park, Kalyani Nagar, and Viman Nagar. In these areas, there are seven cars for every one parking spot! Most of the fights happen between 5 PM and 8 PM.

Stores are also affected; they’ve seen a 33% rise in fights from angry customers over parking. This has caused damages worth ₹1.2 crore in 2023.

To help with this, the police have started watching 127 parking areas closely with cameras and have more officers on the streets during busy times.

The city is planning to spend ₹250 crore to improve parking. They want to build new parking buildings, use smart parking technology, and create special areas for different types of vehicles. They hope this will reduce parking fights by 60% in the first year after they start.
