A doctor in Pune, India, is in trouble because he tricked a 34-year-old woman out of a lot of money—₹12.5 lakhs, which is around $15,000.
This doctor, named Dr. Rajesh Sharma (not his real name), met the woman on a dating website in 2016. They got to know each other and later got married in a small ceremony with family.
The woman trusted Dr. Sharma, but he took advantage of her feelings. He told her to give him money for special medical insurance, saying it would help them both.
Over the years, from 2017 to 2023, he asked her to send money to different bank accounts, saying these were payments for the insurance. But the police found out that most of this money—87%—went into Dr. Sharma’s personal accounts instead.
Things got bad in January 2024 when the woman found out that the insurance papers weren’t right. When she asked Dr. Sharma about it, he ran away and stopped talking to her.
Later, the police learned that he’d also tricked three other women in Maharashtra.
The police are now charging him with cheating and breaking trust. They’re checking if he can still work as a doctor.
Dr. Sharma isn’t caught yet, and the police are looking for him at airports and borders. The woman is also trying to end her marriage while taking legal action against him.
