A well-known restaurant in Pune is going to the Supreme Court because the Bombay High Court told it to close by December 31, 2023. The court made this decision because the restaurant had many problems with food safety.
The restaurant is also in trouble with Burger King, a famous fast food chain. Burger King says the Pune restaurant is using its name without permission, which is against the law. This could confuse customers.
The High Court found 27 problems with the restaurant's food safety during inspections between March and September 2023. These problems included keeping food at the wrong temperatures, not controlling pests, and not following hygiene rules. The restaurant has already paid more than ₹12.5 lakhs in fines because of these issues.
The restaurant's managers say they've fixed many things and spent ₹35 lakhs on improvements and training their staff. They believe closing the restaurant suddenly would hurt 47 workers and cause them to lose about ₹28 lakhs every month.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) says that tests showed very high levels of bacteria in food samples taken during the last inspection.
The Supreme Court will decide what happens next. This case might help decide how other restaurants in India handle food safety and name issues, especially for about 2,800 restaurants that might've similar problems.
