Purandar Airport Drone Survey to Begin April 9 Amidst Protests

Maharashtra is building a new airport called Purandar Airport. On September 15, 2023, workers from a company called Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC) used drones to take pictures of the land where the airport will be built. They looked at 2,832 hectares of land. The drones use special cameras and tools to create 3D pictures of the ground. This will help the workers know how to build the airport.

But not everyone is happy about this. Many farmers and people living nearby, from seven villages like Pargaon, Ekhatpur, and Munjwadi, have started protesting. They’re worried about losing their land and how much money they’ll get for it. Even with these problems, MADC workers say it’s very important to finish the drone survey so they can keep building the airport.

The drones fly high in the sky, between 100 and 400 meters, to take pictures. They can make very detailed maps that are accurate to about 10 centimeters. This helps in planning where the airport runways and terminals will go.

The information from the drone survey will be checked and studied for three months. The first reports should be ready by December 2023. This information will help in designing the airport, which is expected to serve 20 million passengers every year by 2030.

MADC will share the survey results with local officials and environmental groups to make sure planning is done carefully and that nature is protected.
