water tanker demand surge

Pune Sees 40% Surge in Water Tanker Demand Amid Rising Temperatures and Acute Shortage in Merged Villages

Pune is growing fast, but its water system is having big problems. The number of water tanker trips has jumped a lot—from 81,361 trips in 2021-22 to 126,110 trips in 2024-25. This means many more people need water, especially in new areas where there isn’t enough water supply yet.

The new areas in Pune have a lot of people, and soon there will be about 18.11 lakh people living there. But getting water is becoming very expensive. The cost of water tankers has gone up from ₹800 to between ₹1,800 and ₹2,500. People need about 75 tanker deliveries every month just to have enough water.

There are also problems with leaking pipes in the city. About 35% of water is lost because of these leaks. This makes the water shortage even worse and forces people to use more expensive water tankers.

Even though Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is trying to build better water systems in the new areas, they haven’t finished yet. This means people still have to rely on tankers for water. The delays in building the water systems are making it hard for everyone.

This situation shows that Pune really needs to improve its water services quickly so that everyone can have enough water.
